Assisting Your Pregnancy Journey: The Comfort of Shared Maternity Care at Southern Medical Centre

Pregnancy is a transformative and exciting time, filled with anticipation and a multitude of questions. At Southern Medical Centre, serving the communities of Moss Vale, Bundanoon, Bowral, Mittagong, and the surrounding Southern Highlands, we understand the importance of accessible and supportive care during this special period. That’s why we’re proud to offer Antenatal Shared Care, a collaborative approach designed to make your pregnancy journey smoother and more comfortable.

What is Maternity Shared Care?

Maternity Shared Care is a model where your pregnancy care is shared between your GP at Southern Medical Centre and the maternity unit at a local hospital, and occasionally a specialist obstetrician. This collaborative approach allows you to receive comprehensive antenatal care close to home while maintaining access to specialist expertise when needed.  It is only offered to those with low-risk pregnancies.

Why Choose Shared Care with Southern Medical Centre?

  1. Convenience and Accessibility:
  • Travelling to specialist appointments can be challenging, especially as your pregnancy progresses. Shared care allows you to have most of your routine antenatal appointments with your familiar GP at Southern Medical Centre; currently, Dr Karyn Ashley offers this service.
  • This accessibility is particularly beneficial for those living in rural areas like Bundanoon and Moss Vale, reducing travel time and stress.
  1. Continuity of Care:
  • Your GP has a holistic understanding of your medical history and overall health. Continuity of care allows your GP to tailor your pregnancy management to your individual needs.
  • Building a strong relationship with your GP provides a sense of security and trust throughout your pregnancy.
  1. Collaborative Approach:
  • We work closely with local hospitals and obstetricians, ensuring seamless communication and coordination of your care.
  • This collaborative approach allows for timely referrals and specialist input when required, ensuring you receive the best possible care.
  1. Personalised Support:
  • We understand that every pregnancy is unique. Our team provides personalised support, addresses your concerns, and answers your questions throughout your journey.
  • We aim to create a supportive and nurturing environment, empowering you to make informed decisions about your care.
  1. Reduced Hospital Visits:
  • For low-risk pregnancies, shared care can significantly reduce the number of hospital visits required.
